Massage

Why massage?

'Massage' is a term used to describe a range of techniques used on the surface of the body to effect different levels including the muscle tissue and nervous and lymphatic systems. There is medical evidence to show great value of hands on contact to promote physical and mental relaxation.

The aims of therapeutic massage are to induce physical and mental relaxation, improve circulation and muscle tone, prevent soft tissue problems, aid the efficient functioning of the digestive system and encourage the elimination of toxins from the body.

Benefits of massage include an enhanced feeling of well-being, decreased muscle tension, improved blood and lymph circulation, lower blood pressure, increased range of motion, decreased anxiety and improved sleep.

What services do we offer?

We make a variety of different types of massage available to our clients for many different reasons, including:

  • Sports Massage

Massage of foundation tissues directed specifically at the muscles used in athletic activities. This is a deep muscle massage often used around the joints. It combines classical Swedish style massage with trigger points, compression and other techniques to reduce soreness. Excellent when preparing for sports activities or after a strenuous workout.

  • Relaxation Massage

Relaxation Massage is the most commonly practiced form of massage in the West. It combines a variety of techniques that are focused on the body's soft tissues and is applied in a full-body sequence. Relaxation Massage eases stress from the body by calming the nervous system, reducing muscular tension and by stimulating the release of endorphins, a natural chemical in the body that induces deep relaxation.

  • Remedial Massage

Remedial massage is a holistic treatment; that is, a treatment for the whole of the body, as well as the area being treated. The primary aim of remedial massage is to find and treat the cause of the disorder, not only the symptoms. A remedial massage therapist studies anatomy, physiology, related pathology and the techniques of Swedish massage, heat and cold therapies, Kinesthetics and many other related fields.

  • Arthritis Relief

At Urban Retreat we have programs specifically addressing the needs of the elderly population in our local area. Massage can help sufferers of arthritis and related soft tissue rheumatic disorders, and also everyone who feels stiffness or tension in parts of their body.

Urban Retreat offers massage on an hourly basis, at either regular, scheduled intervals (usually once or twice weekly) or on a casual basis by appointment.
